Types of Asphalt Shingle Roofs We Install

There are three types of asphalt shingles to consider: three-tab asphalt shingles, architectural, and premium asphalt shingles.

Three-tab Asphalt Shingles

3-tab shingles are named for their three asphalt tabs. They’re easy for roofers to install, and the pattern is always identical. These types of shingles are also more affordable compared to other types of shingles. You can expect a warranty to last 20–25 years.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

Architectural shingles are also known as laminated shingles. They’re made to be heavy-duty and are one of the highest-quality options in roofing materials. You can expect these types of shingles to last 25–30 years in good weather conditions.

Premium Asphalt Shingles

Premium shingles are among the top of-the-line in every category of shingles. They’re thicker, heavier, and produce lines that create depth not typically found in regular roofs. They come in cedar shakes, which look like natural cedar, and slate, which looks more traditional.

The Pros and Cons of Asphalt Shingle Roofing

When making your decision about the type of roofing you prefer, there will be pros and cons. It’s best to know what to expect.

Pros of Asphalt Shingles

  • Affordability: In conjunction with financing options, asphalt is a no-brainer for homeowners on a budget. With proper installation and maintenance, a quality roof doesn’t have to break the bank.
  • Color Variety: It comes in a wide variety of colors, ranging from neutrals to statement colors. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can even choose asphalt shingle roofing that emulates wood or slate.
  • Simple Installation: Asphalt shingle roof repair is simple and cost-effective. New shingles can sometimes be installed on top of existing shingles. With proper maintenance, asphalt shingle roofing has a lifespan of between 20 and 30 years.

Cons of Asphalt Shingles

  • Not Environmentally Friendly: Asphalt shingles are not recyclable since they can release harmful emissions. As the shortest roof lifespan, asphalt shingles contribute a lot of waste.
  • Susceptible to Weather: Wide-ranging temperatures and extreme weather conditions can cause cracks and warping of some asphalt shingle types.

6/30/23 In June 2023, I contracted with Mile High Roofing and I dealt with Scott – the manager and owner. He reroofed my 2500 sq. ft. ranch home in Parker, CO that was hailed out in May 2023. I am uncertain how we found each other but … More I am sure glad we did. I am 81 years old and over the past 30 years I have had to replace six hailed-out roofs on three different homes. Two while living in Centennial, CO, three in Highlands Ranch and now one in Parker. I must say that working with Scott has been a wonderful and surprising experience – this was not the case with my five previous roofers. What makes Scot so great to work with – he is extremely professional, very personable and man of his word. During the reroofing process, Scot kept me informed (either by phone or TXT messaging) every step of the way. At all times he informed me of exactly what was to be done and precisely when and how. In all cases he met each and every schedule – on time and the constructions work was well done. What as pleasure and I am well pleased. My experience with previous roofers was often confusing, challenging and the quality was often less than satisfactory. I thank you Scot for making my Parker roof restoration experience as good as it could be and you deserve a five-star rating.
